Trustees of the VIRGINIA J. WILKINS FOUNDATION are pleased to announce recipients of 2015 Grant awards totaling $416,777.00. Last year, the Foundation awarded $450,000.00 to the community.
Recipients for 2015 are:
The Arkansas City Area Arts Council to establish a “Seeds Mentoring” program to facilitate local artists seeking growth in their discipline and the growth of the Arkansas City Arts program. The award was $22,603.82.
The City of Arkansas City will receive $33,500.00 to fund a master plan for Wilson Park and the additional 4.5 acre vacated Hospital parcel located North of Birch Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets, adjoining the Park to the North which will be expended in 2016 or 2017 as the plan is developed and billed.
The Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum requested additional funding from the 2014 Grant to complete installation of HVAC for the Theater area and updating the sound system in the Theater. The award for 2015 was $24,600.00, coupled with last year’s award of $30,300.00.
Cowley College received monetary funding to purchase new instruments for $16,500.00; to initiate a poetry writing emersion for $2,500.00; and to initiate in the round Theater of William Shakespeare’s “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream” for $7,500.00. The Trustees have taken under consideration endowed internships for the Theater.
The Arkansas City Public Library received monetary grant of $9,100.00 as “Seed money” in converting micro-film to digital.
The Chaplain Nature Center was approved to rebuild the staircase providing access to the lower Forrest flood plain at a cost of $45,000.00, with volunteers to contribute significant dollar value for the project.
The Trustees renewed their pledge to the Burford Renovation Project @ $200,000.00 for 2015,and are committed to pay USD #470 the remainder of the 2014 Grant award of $57,500.00 and the balance of the Wilson Park Rotunda improvements to the City of Arkansas City of $53,973.50, both payable in 2015.
